Little Green Thumbs

Exciting things are happening in our classroom thanks to the Little Green Thumbs Program.

Little Green Thumbs is offered through Agriculture in the Classroom, an initiative of the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Agriculture. As part of the program, we will plant and grow an indoor garden while learning about food systems in a fun and interactive way.

Mr. Downton helped get our special light system ready and today we prepared our soil and planted our seeds.

Keep watching for updates about our plants.  We'd love to hear from you.  If you have any questions for us be sure to let us know!

Our Visit With Artist Susan Furneaux

Today we met a real live artist, Susan Furneaux.

She taught us all about wool and felting.

We made a felt ball that looked like the Earth.

Here is how we made our felt ball (retold by our Blue Group):

Step 1: Get your white wool and dip it in soapy water.

Step 2. Squish it back and forth between your hands.

Step 3. Take a little bit of green wool and wrap it around the white piece like a present.

Step 4. Dip it back in the soapy water and squish it back and forth between your hands.

Step 5. Put a little bit of blue and brown wool around the ball.

Step 6 Dip it back in the soapy water and squish it back and forth between your hands.

Step 7 Roll it hard between your hands to make it a ball.

Step 8 Bring it to the bathroom and run cold water over it to wash the soapy water out!

Step 9 Let it dry!

Our new artist friend is coming back to visit us next week.  We can't wait to see what we will create with her then. Have you ever felted before?

How did you find our instructions?  If you have a question for us please let us know!

It's Almost Skating Time!

Information was sent home before Christmas holidays began about our upcoming Skating Program.

All kindergarten students will be participating in a 5 week skating program at The Jack Byrne Arena in Torbay.  The program will run from January 27th – March 9th and all students are expected to participate.

Skating instruction will be provided for all students and CSA approved hockey or figure skating helmets are mandatory. Other helmets such as bicycle helmets do not provide appropriate protection for ice skating.  Students will need mittens or gloves and layered clothing is preferred so the students are warm but have appropriate mobility to skate.

There is a one time cost of $35.00 per student which covers all costs (ice rental, busing, instructor fees). If you have any concerns regarding this cost, please contact our administration to discuss. Skating fees are due this Wednesday, January 14th.

We are in the process of collecting used skates and helmets to be loaned to students who are in need of equipment.  If you have, or know of anyone who has any that can be donated to the school, please send them along.  If you are in need of skates or a helmet, please let us know as soon as possible and we will try our best to help.

All kindergarten students will attend the morning session only for the days when skating is scheduled. As each skating day approaches, we will be looking for a small number of volunteers to accompany us and assist where necessary.  Specific details and sign up information will be sent home prior to each session.

Our skating days are scheduled for:

Tuesday January 27th 9:30 - 10:30
Tuesday February 10th 9:30 - 10:30
Tuesday February 24th 9:30 - 10:30
Tuesday March 3rd 9:30 - 10:30

Monday March 9th 9:30 - 10:30
