Adventures with Aa

We are learning about the letter Aa.  Here are some of the songs and stories we found:

We are becoming Aa detectives.

Brooklyn says Aa ia for Andie.
Mason says Aa is for apple.
Matthew says Aa is for acrobat.
Omair says Aa is for acting.
Sonya says Aa is for alligator.
Naomi says Aa is for ants.

We learned a song about the letter Aa.

Have a look around your house.  Can you find something that starts with an Aa? Send us a message to let us know!

Calling All Letter Experts! Let the Detective Work Begin!

We have been working hard on learning all about our first set of letters Ss, Aa, Tt, Pp, Ii, and Nn and have learned a song and action to help us remember each one.

Now I have a mission for you at home.  We are trying to find as many different things around our house that begin with each letter.  However, you do not need to bring them into kindergarten.  Instead, leave us a comment at the bottom of this post to let us know what you find for each letter.  We will collect them all and turn it into a special project!

Let the letter hunting begin!

Fun with an iPad!

Mrs. Fennemore's little boy (who is really a big boy) let us use his iPad today! We were very careful with it.  We are exploring iPads a little to show the grownups who rule all the schools around us that they are a great learning tool!  A few of the kinderkids spent 5 minutes of Daily 5 choice time today to Work on Writing or Word Work using iPad apps.  Look at what a few kinderkids did in under 5 minutes!  Superstars!

First we had some friends choose a free app Skitch to label what was happening with our pumpkin seeds and our caterpillars.

We also had two stories created using the My Story app.  The kinders found this one really easy to use.  We can read and listen to their finished stories on the ipad but we couldn't post it directly here - so I had to videotape it playing on the ipad for you to see! We hope you like them! Not bad for under 5 minutes work!

Volcano....

and How a Pumpkin Seed Grows

And another friend told a story about a caterpillar.

Another friend practised how to print and name different letters using My Name.

The Word Magic app was another favorite! Some friends found missing initial sounds while others were stretching words to hear the missing vowel! We are great word detectives!

We are hoping an iPad fairy will come and leave us a few iPads to explore a little longer!

Learning to do the Daily 5!

No, it's not a new dance! The Daily 5 is just a different way to deliver the Language Arts curriculum! It builds on the students' ability to choose how they want to learn. We are learning to be "experts" in each of the 5 choices.

This week we practiced "Word Work" and "Read to Self". Students choose what activity they would like to do first, second and third and spend just four minutes working at each activity. Eventually (when they are experts!) more time will be spent working independently.

Some of the Word Work choices in action.
Kindergarten friends in their "special" reading spaces.

Ms. Warren was so pleased and proud of their hard work and she knows they will be at "expert" status in no time!

Many of these songs have come home in our song folder, but thought I'd post the link to help with any tunes forgotten.  The actions for each letter are also shown. I hope you enjoy singing along with them at home!

Have you heard about letter Cc and the castanets?  We added the song to our song folder for you to have fun singing at home! Some friends from our blue group wanted to share their clicking and singing skills with you!

Why not go on a letter Cc hunt at home and see what you can find?  Be sure to comment and tell us what you find!

Letter Aa is Amazing!

When we visited Mrs. Russell's Kindergarten Class Blog we saw that her kindergarten children had formed the Letter A with their bodies.  We decided to try it too! We were amazing!

At snacktime, some of our Blue Group friends discovered they had letter Aa snacks!

Once Fatima finished her snack she started work on a letter Aa collage!  Thank you Fatima! Amazing!

Letter Aa's are everywhere.  Have a look around you.  What can you find that starts with an Aa sound?
