Let the Countdown to Christmas Begin

What a day for a tree lighting ceremony!  After a practise with Mr. House for our upcoming Christmas Concert performance, we headed outside to join the rest of the school for MDE's annual tree lighting ceremony! The sun was so bright we weren't able to see the lights on the tree but it didn't stop us from enjoying the singing with our friends.

If you are passing our school in the evening or wee hours of the morning, you'll spot the lights.  Aren't they pretty?

What are your favourite ways to decorate for a holiday? Leave us a comment to let us know!

Skating Day Informaton

Watch magic bags tomorrow for an important note about next week's skating day!  There will be a slip you will need to complete and return by Friday to help us with our preparation for the day.  We thank you for your help!

Please note...

Our school wide skating day is approaching.  All kindergarten students will attend the morning session on Tuesday, December 16th.  Please note, that dismissal will be 12:00 on this day.

We have had a number of questions regarding how the morning will work and what the children will need to participate.  Please note:

·         Any child who comes to school (whether skating or not) will be brought to the arena.  A viewing area will be available to any students not skating. Please ensure that students are dressed warmly.

·         All students who will be going on the ice will require skates and a helmet.  There will not be any available at the arena.

·         Many kindergarten students have limited skating experience.  If you feel your child will need assistance while on the ice, we ask that if at all possible an adult (parent, grandparent, babysitter, relative) accompany your child to ensure their safety. While we will try to provide as much assistance as possible, it will be difficult to supervise and assist everyone on the ice at all times. Adult volunteers do not have to wear skates while on the ice, but can if they have them.

·         We will try to have a small snack before we leave for the arena.  Students can bring their snack bag to school as they normally do.

We are looking forward to a fun skate!

Sharing Soup :: We Need Your Help

We have a special activity planned for next week and could use your help.  We will be making a Sharing Soup to share with our kindergarten friends. We are asking for all kinderkids to bring ONE vegetable on Wednesday, October 8th.  Please ensure that the vegetable is not peeled or washed as our chefs will be preparing all aspects of the meal.  We will also be looking to borrow any vegetable peelers that you may be able to lend us for that day.  Please ensure that the peeler is labelled with your child’s name and we will be sure to return it by Thursday.  We thank you in advance for your help! Recycling Days at MDE

Ready, Set, Recycle!

Tuesday's are Recycling Days at MDE! Bring along your bag of recyclables on Tuesday morning and drop off at the back of our school by the fence.  Be sure to send along a little note in the magic bag to let us know you recycled and we'll be sure to have all kinders participating entered into our school draw. Afternoon kinders can bring their recycling on Monday afternoons so they can be picked up on Tuesday morning. To find out what you can bag and drop off at the school, click the image to the left to go to the MMSB site.

We thank you for not only helping our environment, but supporting our school as well! If you have any questions, please let us know.

Kindergarten Busing Begins

Busing is always the one area that gives most headaches to parents and teachers and bus drivers!  We acknowledge this and apologize for the lack of specific information we are able to give you. Until exact numbers and addresses are analyzed by the bus company, it is impossible to determine exact times for the bus runs. Just have faith that after the first couple of days, a regular routine will be established and the times for drop off and pickup will be more consistent.

On the first day of kindergarten we collected pick up and bus information for each child to determine who would be starting busing on Monday. We have a contracted bus company that provides busing for the students of Macdonald Drive Elementary School and on Friday afternoon, we forwarded the names and addresses to them.  We also have our bus tags ready at school for the children to wear when we put them on the bus at school.

There are two different bus runs for the kindergarten classes - Early Morning/3:00 Bus and Lunchtime Bus.

1. Early Morning/3:00 Bus Run : Three different buses transport the children to school for 8:30 a.m. and home at 3:00 p.m.  We call those Bus 11, Bus 12, and Bus 13.  YAll bus runs will begin at 8:20. Please note that these buses do not stop at each individual house.  They have designated areas where they stop.  We do not have those exact locations, however if you are unsure of where it may be, please contact the office and they will try to answer your specific questions. This early morning and end of day bus will have a mixture of students from Kindergarten - Grade 6.  Kindergarten children will be sat at the front of the bus unless they are travelling with older siblings and wish to sit with them.  When the buses arrive at MDE in the morning, a teacher will meet the bus and the children will be walked into kindergarten.  As well, all kindergarten children will be walked to the door of their bus at the end of the day.

2.  Lunchtime Bus Run : One bus will bring the morning kindergarten children home and pick up the afternoon kindergarten children.  The bus will leave the school at approximately 11:35 (however will likely be a little later the first few days).  We do not have specific details on the route this bus will take as the route has to be devised by the contractor based on the addresses we provided them.  We ask that parents be watching and waiting outside for the first day at 11:40.  You will be able to speak with the driver then to address any of your questions about this specific bus run. Because only kindergarten children are on this bus, the driver will try to stop at each individual house for the lunchtime kindergarten pickup and drop off. Please note there are some streets that do not provide enough room for the bus to turn, so the stop may be on the corner of your street. Again, if you have specific questions, please contact the office and they will try to find the answers for you.

We hope this helps...at least a little.  We thank you for your patience and cooperation as we get the bus system up and running!

Grade One Day :: Red Group

Today was our Grade One Day! We came to school for the whole day!

We had no time to waste.  We went to grade one right away! We met all the grade ones and we met the teachers Ms. Vatcher and Ms. Whiffen! They read us a book named Pirate Pearl by Phoebe Gilman.

Then we learned about treasure maps. We colored our maps and made some spots that show where you have to look for a treasure.  We call them landmarks.

We had to stop our map making because we had a visitor.

Her name was Ms. Hickman and she talked to us about recycling, litter, composting, and ways to keep our earth healthy.  Today was World Environment Day! Did you know that?

We came back to our kindergarten classroom for our snack.  After snack we finished our treasure maps.  We crumpled them up into a pretend snowball and then we sprayed them with tea bag water to make them look old.

Then we got ready for lunch.

We went back to pod one to eat our lunch with the grade ones.  After lunch we went outside to play with all the boys and girls.  We had to be careful.  Only two friends had a boo boo but they were brave.

After playtime was over we went to gym and music class.

It was a fabulous day!

Kaelie loved hanging upside down on the climber!
Corinne liked sitting by herself for lunch because she was shy when she was sitting with the grade ones. She also liked watching Arthur at lunchtime.
Sophia liked hanging upside down with no hands on the climber.  Mrs. Fennemore says that is dangerous with a capital D!
Nathan liked having lunch with the grade ones.  But sadly he couldn't have school lunch like the grade ones.  Mrs. Fennemore says he will have to wait until he is a real grade one boy for that! He also liked it when he played tag with his friends.
Lily was a little nervous but she sucked it up and had fun after a little while. She liked it when she saw her friend Rigel from up her street.
Olivia liked having lunch with the grade one boys and girls.
Julianna liked going to gym best.
Michael liked playing Hide and Seek outside with his friend Noah.
Xavier liked it when he had snack with the grade ones.  He met his bus friend Nic in grade one.
Logan liked it when he saw his friend Nathan outside at lunchtime.
Angelina liked meeting a new friend in grade one.  Her name was Amelia.
Samantha liked going outside at lunch but she didn't like it when she was hurt.
Anya liked it when she played outside on the climber.
Elsa liked it when she hung upside on the climber and she also liked it when she spun on the climber.
Aiden liked it when he played outside.

Mrs. Fennemore said we had a great day!  We are ready for grade one!

Our Grade One Day :: Blue Group

Today was our grade one day! We came to school for the full day!

We worked so hard. First, it was Bridget's birthday! We sang the birthday songs to her. Then, we picked the helper. Next, we practised our poems.  Finally, we went to visit grade one.

We sat with the grade ones and Ms. Vatcher and Ms. Mullins read us a story called The Balloon Tree by Phoebe Gilman.

We blew up balloons and stapled them to the wall to make our own Balloon Tree!

It was snack time so we came back to kindergarten for snack.

After snack we asked questions to the Student of the Week and then we made a story for the Student of the Week.

Finally it was lunch time! We went to the grade one classroom to eat our lunch. When we were finished, we went outside to play with the grade ones.

After lunch, we went to music class and then we went to gym class with the grade ones!

It was a lot of fun!

Riley liked playing outside the best.
Hannah liked all of it!
Lauren liked all of it the best and especially blowing up the balloons.  Some of the grade ones popped their balloons.
Jade loved all of it.
Kaleigh liked blowing up balloons.
Haroon liked playing in the gym the best. Red light and green light was awesome!
Leah liked all of it!
Gerard liked music class the best. He also liked going to grade one.
Eva loved everything and loved it when her friends played with her.
Bridget liked all of it the best.
Jackson liked a little bit of the music but did not like gym all that much.
Isabella loved it when we went outside to play with our friends.
Rasil liked all of it the best.
Julia liked playing with her friend Malcolm.
Shelby loved all of it!
Elsa liked all of it too.

Mrs. Fennemore says we were fabulous grade one boys and girls.  We are ready for grade one!

A Special Visitor and a Special Project

Four days ago we had a special visitor!  Farmer Susan from Lester's Farm came to help us start our very own Kinder Garden!

It is too cold to put our seeds outside so we will keep them inside until it is summer.

When the seeds grow food we can bring the food home to eat! (Jade)

We planted little tiny cabbage seeds. (Angelina)
We planted lettuce seeds.  The color of the seeds were white.  They were a circle shape. (Anya)

We planted turnip seeds. (Maria)
We put the seeds on the top of the soil. We couldn't put them all the way down because then they would feel like an elephant was sitting on them. We put a blanket over them so that they won't be cold and they would grow.

It is not a real blanket. It was little square stuff.  We are not sure what it is called.  We can't remember so we should ask Farmer Susan. (Eva, Jade, Julia, Noah)

We planted pumpkin seeds. (Corinne)
We dug a little hole.  We put a pumpkin seed inside and filled it back up with dirt and then we watered it. (Nathan)
We have to water all the seeds once a day by squirting five squirts  in a row. (Logan)
Then we will see a sprout. (Lily, Logan, Julianna, Elsa W.)
The root from my pumpkin plant is white. (Matthew)

When the plants are strong enough and are ready we will plant them outside of our classroom in our very own garden.  Gerard's mom and dad have some special helpers that are going to get the ground ready for us to start planting!  Thank you to Gerard's mom and dad and the special helpers!

Thank you as well to Lester's Farm and Farmer Susan who were so kind to help us get our Kinder Garden started!  We are so excited!

Stay tuned for updates!

It's Coming :: Volunteer Appreciation Week

While browsing Pinterest last night I came across this quote:

It is one that I had heard before, but it really sums up volunteers perfectly.  There are very few people these days that have the extra time to help out with everything they would like to.  Juggling family commitments, work life and the general running of a household is often overwhelming....which is why we are so thankful for all that our volunteers continue to do at Macdonald Drive Elementary.  I can't imagine how different our year would be and the experiences the children would miss if it wasn't for you - our volunteers!

Invitations have come home in magic bags, however with the recent storms and sicknesses it is quite possible some may not have made it home to you. We are hoping that as many of you as possible will be able to join us.  In case you missed the invitation, here are the details.  If you haven't yet returned your ticket, you can send us an email to let us know if you can join us. We hope to see you next Thursday!

It's Coming :: MDE Healthy Commotion Day

The City of St. John's will be coming to MDE on the morning of Monday April 14th to lead us in a morning of physical activity.  As a result of this event, all kindergarten children will attend the morning session 8:30 - 11:30.  There will be no afternoon session on this day. All kinderkids are asked to come dressed as they would for gym classes. It will be a fun day for all!

And then we tried it ourselves!  Robot+Beatboxing = Fun times!

We Can Be A Good Friend

We know how to be a good friend!

Michael says we can work together.
Logan says we can help people if they are having a hard time trying to do something. If someone is all by themselves, you could ask them what they like to do and go do it with them.
Maria says people need to tell each other how they are feeling.
Samantha says when someone needs help you can work together without arguing.
Sophia says you can babysit a puppy. You can also be a good friend by helping people.
Lily says when someone is having trouble zipping up their zipper, you can go and help them zip it up!  If someone is feeling sad you can give them a hug.
Olivia says we should help each other.
Nathan says when someone is sick in the hospital you can go see them or bring them some flowers. That would make them feel better.
Elsa says if someone is being bad to a friend, you should tell them to please stop bullying.
Xavier says you can build a puzzle with a friend.
Julianna says if someone is sad you should play with them.
Corinne says we should be a friend by sharing.
Brianna says we can help a friend build a tower.
Jasmine says she can help a friend zip a zipper.
Anya says we should be nice to each other.

Gerard says a teacher could help you if you need it.
Riley tried to make a friend feel better when he was sad.
Noah says if someone is feeling sad and you don't know what to do, you can just show them your smile.
Hannah says you can ask mom or dad to help you.  Like if someone poured water over your head, they could help.
Jackson says you can give a friend a hug.
Julia says if someone is sad because they can't tie their shoes, you could help them.
Rasil says if your friend is sad, you can give them a hug!
Eva says if someone is feeling lonely, you should ask them if they would like to play.
Bridget says you can help a friend by playing with them.
Leah says if someone is sad you can play with them.
Elsa says if someone is crying you could give them a toy or a big hug.
Isabella says if someone uses words that you don't like, you should tell them to stop.
Jade can be a good friend by playing with her friends.

What other ways can you be a good friend?

MDE Winter Olympic Day

After a couple of delays, we finally were able to get outside to enjoy an Olympic Winter Fun Day! Ms. Waterman planned lots of fun activities for us! We ran, laughed lots, and most importantly, we worked together with our kindergarten friends! It was an awesome day! Here are some snapshots of our fun! We hope you like them!

Sunday, February 23, 2014

On Wednesday February 26th we will be celebrating our 100th day of kindergarten!  We will be completing all sorts of fun activities that day and will require your help with a couple before the big day arrives.  Here are the details:

Collect a set of 100 items.  Please help your child fill a bag with 100 like items and bring them to school.  Examples could be 100 cheerios, 100 pennies, 100 paperclips, 100 pieces of macaroni, 100 buttons, etc.  The possibilities are endless however the 100 items should be something that we can keep at school as we will be weighing them, building with them, and using them for a variety of projects.  To help with the counting, we sent home a workmat which will help your child count 100 items.  Counting sets of 10 is easiest by placing ten on each circle of the workmat.  Our focus is on 100 being made up of 10 sets of 10. This will make their counting much more manageable.  Please send in your filled baggie by Monday February 24th.

Dress for the day!  Have a discussion with your child about how they would look if they were 100 years old.  Would their hair be the same?  How would they dress? How would they walk?  Would their eyesight be the same as it is now? Use your imagination and come to school dressed like a 100 year old!

And it's another closure...

NLESD just announced that schools are closed for the morning. Updates will be made at 10:30. Stay tuned...

Wednesday, February 19, 2014

Schedule Changes :: Please Note

  • Outside Olympics Day has been rescheduled for Monday, February 24th. If the weather cooperates this time and it goes ahead as plannedthe kinderkids will need to come dressed for outside play. As a result of the rescheduling, the kinderkids will come in their regular session rather than all attend in the afternoon. Please make the adjustment on our class calendars to avoid confusion.
  • The extra school closures this month means that our 100th day of school has been delayed.  It will now be Tuesday February 25th.  Again, please make adjustments on your February calendar to avoid confusion.
  • Thank you to those who sent in family photos.  If you have not yet sent in photos of family members, please do so by Friday, February 21st as we will be beginning our activities then.  If you do not have photos, a drawing of family members will be fine.

Winter Olympics at MDE

It sure was a very busy afternoon in Kindergarten.  Both groups came together for MDE's Opening Ceremonies of the Winter Olympic Games. Loud, exciting times....some days just have to be like that!

Before heading to the gymnasium for the celebrations, we talked a little about the Olympics and shared some of the things we already knew.  Kindergarten has been assigned Luge as a sport of focus and we quickly learned that this was a sport that we knew only a little about!  While we will be exploring all aspects of the Olympics we will especially be focusing on this sport! The Sochi Olympics has a brand new Luge event - Relay.  We watched a video clip about it.
We look forward to learning a lot about the Olympics over the next few weeks...we'll try to share as much of it as we can with you...both in pictures and in words!

Keeping Safe From Fire

Today we saw a fireman. His name was Inspector Power. He showed us a house that showed all the dangers and bad things that could happen and how things could catch on fire.  We learned how to make our house safe from fire.

Here is some of what we learned:

When there is a fire, get out as quick as you can. - Lily
We hear a fire alarm if there is a fire - Anya
A window can help you get out if there is a fire - Brianna
If there is a fire you should have a fire plan to get out of the house - Logan
You have to feel a door to see if it's hot before you open it.  If it's hot, don't open it, go the other way! - Samantha
You have to stop, drop, and roll if your clothes catch on fire. - Elsa W.
If there is a fire you have to get out quick. - Kaelie
If there is smoke in a room up high, duck and crawl out of the room. - Aiden
No hiding under a bed if there is a fire.  Get out of the room quickly. - Michael
Stay away from fire. - Sophia
Don't touch matches and light them on fire.  If you find them, tell a grownup to put them away. - Nathan
Don't hide under your bed if there is a fire. - Corinne
No running if there is a fire.  You could fall and then catch on fire. You should walk quickly. - Angelina
Don't touch gas.  It is dangerous.  - Jasmine
A stove is hot.  Do not touch it. - Sulafah
If there is a pot that catches on fire, mom or dad or a big sister can put the cover on and the fire will stop. - Julianna
We should check to see if fire alarms are working. - Olivia
If there is an emergency call 911 for firemen, ambulance and police - Maria
If your clothes catch on fire you Stop, Drop, and Roll! - Matthew

We have a mission for you!  Do you have a fire plan at your house?  You should.  Be sure to make a plan and check to see that your house is safe and okay.

Calling All Groundhogs!

The past few days we have been talking about Weather Lore and the significance of the groundhog.  We investigated shadows, discovered that there are no groundhogs in Newfoundland, and read a wonderful new story from our library - Wake Up, Groundhog! Thank you Ms. Warren for bringing it to us!

February 2nd is Groundhog Day!   I have a mission for all kinderkids.  Since we have no groundhogs in our province to watch, we will be the groundhogs!  When you wake up on Sunday, check outside to see if you can find your shadow...just like a groundhog would.  We'll be tracking our February weather to see if the tale of the groundhog is true!

We wonder about groundhogs all over the world...will they see their shadow?  Leave us a comment to let us know!
